Throughout our website, in the office, and anywhere you see information from us, you will see just how excited and passionate we are about dental implants. You may be wondering why that is. After all, why would an implant be any better than a bridge? We are going to explain that for you today!
A dental bridge used to be the best option for a missing tooth. It replaced the tooth itself, and it looks pretty good sitting there in your smile. You have to look pretty hard to be able to see a bridge in someone’s mouth, so what’s the big deal? Let’s take a look at the secrets behind a dental implant and come back to that question.
Restoring the Root of Your Tooth
Your tooth is made up of two areas: the area that shows (the crown) and the area below the gumline (the root). In order for a restoration to be complete, it needs to replace the entire tooth, meaning both areas of the tooth.
A dental implant is the only restoration that goes below the gumline to replace the tooth root. Not only does it replace the root, but it makes the restoration feel completely natural. You see, other restorations rely on the adjacent teeth for support, instead of a root. This puts pressure and discomfort on those adjacent teeth leaving them more likely to develop their own problems.
So, an implant restores the root of the tooth, but how does it stay? The process of osseointegration is the secret to successful restorations. Dental implant posts are made of titanium, which works well with your bones. When we place the titanium implant into the jawbone, the one will actually fuse with the titanium.
You are left with a permanent, solid bond that holds your implant in just as well as your natural teeth were held in place. Once the root/implant is in place and healed, we will place a custom-made dental crown on top of the implant to complete the restoration. It looks like a natural tooth, feels like a natural tooth, and functions like a natural tooth!
So, what’s the big deal about dental implants? The implant is the only restoration on the market that will completely restore all aspects of your missing natural tooth without doing further damage to your surviving teeth.
