It’s that time of year again where just about every kid in the country is jumping for joy! Summer break couldn’t come fast enough this year. Now that we’re in the midst of summer relaxation, we want to take some time to discuss some common problems we see for kids’ smiles during summer break.

Don’t get us wrong, we enjoy the freedom and excitement as much as anyone, but we see kids really struggling with oral health during the summer months. It might not seem like a big deal to get lax during this time, but there can be a significant impact for your child’s smile.

Let’s spend some time talking about how you can help your child maintain a healthy, happy smile this summer. We hope you can take some of our ideas and make them your own for your family! Let’s get started.

Creating a Summer Routine

The real problem at hand during the summer months is that the school routine is gone. For kids whose parents work, the routine might not change a lot, but it still changes. Kids who stay at home often see a huge shift in routine. With that shift comes a loss of habit. That’s one reason why kids often struggle to keep their teeth healthy during the summer. Here are some ways to fix that.

Set Phone Reminders – Kids aren’t the only ones who forget! Having the kids home throws your routine off, as well. Set a phone reminder to help you all remember that oral hygiene needs to happen as a part of your new loose schedule.

Encourage Great Oral Hygiene – When you see your kids doing an excellent job, be sure to applaud and encourage them! This goes a long way in the development of independent oral hygiene routines.

Make an Appointment – Use this time to come see us. It’s a great way to help your child remember that oral health matters!

Protect Teeth From Summer Habits

Aside from the change in routine, we also see an increase in bad habits during the summer. We aren’t thinking as much about eating healthy foods for three meals a day, and kids diets often go into a summer party phase! Take a look at some common culprits and what you can do to avoid problems!

Sugary Treats – Popsicles, ice cream, candy, oh my! Summertime is full of sweet treats for your little ones. It’s ok to have treats, but put a limit on how much is going on. Also, help your kids remember the importance of caring for their teeth after a lot of sugar.

Starchy Snacks – Your snack cabinet is probably struggling to keep up with those growing kids! Common snack foods, like chips, crackers, and pretzels seem like a good idea, but the starches in those snacks can really stick to your child’s teeth and lead to decay down the road.

Sugar-Filled Beverages – Juice, soda, and sports drinks can be fun treats during the summer, but just as with the sweet treats, limit the amount your kids have access to, and practice good oral hygiene habits.

Make an Appointment!

As we mentioned above, this is a great time to make an appointment for your kids to come into the office. We would love to see them! While they are here, we will complete the following procedures to ensure that your child has a happy, healthy smile!

Cleaning – A good dental cleaning goes a long way. We will remove harmful bacteria and plaque from your child’s smile. This will prevent decay, but it will also give your child’s smile a boost in confidence!

Exam – A thorough look at your youngster’s smile is really important, especially as he is losing and growing teeth. The structure of his mouth is changing rapidly, and we want to be able to keep an eye on that!

Prevention – We also provide prevention for kids who need a little bit of extra protection. Fluoride treatments or dental sealants can keep your child’s smile happy and healthy for years to come.
