If you got a new set of tires for your car, would you want the lug nuts tightened after the tires were put on? We are going to go out on a limb and guess that you would.
You could probably drive for a little while with the tires unsecured, but you also realize they will stay in place much longer if you take the time secure them where you want them to be.
In a way, this is similar to getting dentures when you could have implant-supported dentures instead.
Implants are a great development in modern dentistry. We are proud to offer them for our patients at Lapalco Family Dental. Call or come by our Louisiana dental office in Marrero to learn more about how implants can make your dentures even better.
Hall Of Fame Development
You might think we are exaggerating when we say that dental implants are a great invention for all humanity, but we have a good reason for saying this.
Dr. Per-Ingvar Brånemark, the inventor of the modern dental implant, was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame earlier this month. Not bad for something he invented in part because of an unanticipated result while he was doing research with rabbits.
Dr. Brånemark is anatomy professor and a physician. In the 1950s, he was conducting a study to learn more about blood circulation. As part of his research, he placed titanium chambers into the leg bones of a rabbit.
His intention was to use them multiple times. Instead, he found that the rabbit’s bone had bonded to the chamber making it very difficult to remove.
Dr. Brånemark recognized the potential benefits of this discovery. He even coined a term, osseointegration, to describe the bonding that took place between the bone and the titanium.
He used this knowledge to develop the first modern dental implant. He successfully placed implants into a patient in September of 1965. The original design has been improved through more research, but and today, titanium dental implants are used routinely around the world.
The Pros And Cons Of Dentures
Traditional dentures do offer some benefits.
If you lose all or most of your teeth, then you may feel extremely self-conscious about smiling or speaking with other people. This can make social and professional interactions more stressful, and in some cases, it can cause people to become withdrawn.
We want our patients to feel comfortable no matter where they are, and dentures can make that happen.
A set of dentures can restore the appearance of a full set of teeth, which can make it easier to smile. Dentures also can be used to assist in pronouncing certain words and sounds, just as your teeth once did.
We would all agree that biting and chewing food is much more difficult if you don’t have any teeth.
Dentures won’t restore all of your chewing ability. In fact, studies have shown that people with dentures have about one-fifth the bite force of someone with all of his or her teeth.
But one-fifth is better than nothing. You may not be able to eat corn on the cob, but you can eat kernels of corn.
The downside is that traditional dentures can come loose, often at awkward times. Speaking, singing, sneezing, laughing, eating, and coughing are some of the things that can cause your dentures to slip out of place.
Security And Stability
Earlier we mentioned the role that lug nuts play in securing tires on your car. Dental implants greatly improve the security and stability of your dentures.
Implants replace the roots of your teeth. Like the roots, they are anchored in your jaw. When they are placed, your jawbone will bond to the implants as you heal from the procedure.
When your jaw is ready, we can attach your dentures to the implants. This will keep them exactly where you want them to be whether you are socializing at a celebration or going to lunch with a friend from work.
And when you are having lunch, you can feel comfortable ordering anything that you want from the menu. With dental implants, you may not regain all of your original bite force, but you can get closer to 100 percent than you may realize.
Dentures are OK, but implant-supported dentures are great. You can get them at Lapalco Family Dental. If you live in or near Marrero, LA, call us at 504-264-6461 or use our online form to schedule a consultation in our office.
