You take care of your mouth by brushing and flossing every day. You don’t need a cleaning just yet. Perhaps you think you can wait to see the dentist until you have a problem. Think again! Your visits to the dentist are about so much more than a cleaning. You have access to an experienced, trained dental health professional who can recognize signs of oral problems, even in their early stages. By attending these checkup appointments, you are able to stop these problems before they have the chance to cause significant damage.

Tooth Decay

Through an oral examination and diagnostic technology, your dentist can spot tooth decay early on. Most of the time when tooth decay finally becomes noticeable to the untrained eye, it causes severe pain or sensitivity and has already damaged your tooth’s structure. At this point, it likely requires more intensive treatment than if you had come earlier. You can spare yourself from experiencing unpleasant symptoms by going to the dentist regularly and catching tooth decay while it’s small and easy to resolve.

Gum Disease

Gum disease is a chronic inflammatory condition in the gums that can wreak havoc in your mouth. Even with diligent oral health practices at home, plaque, which houses harmful bacteria, can build up and harden over time. These bacteria produce acids that irritate your gums and attack the connective tissue between your gums and teeth. Without professional intervention, gum disease can lead to gum recession, permanent damage to the supporting tissue and bone, and ultimately tooth loss. Your six-month appointments with your dentist help prevent gum disease from advancing that far and give you the treatment you need to restore your oral health.

Oral Cancer

One important part of routine dental exams is oral cancer screenings. As with many other cancers, the sooner you detect oral cancer, the more likely you are to beat it. If you wait to see the dentist until you know there is a problem, it could be too late already or, at minimum, you have lost precious time that could have been used in treatment. The few minutes it takes to do the screening could save your life! Your dental visits are worth going to twice a year to ensure your health.

TMJ Disorders

The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) are located just in front of your ears and connect your lower jaw to the upper. When your bite or jaws are misaligned, it can cause pain and uneven wear on your teeth. TMJ disorders can also influence daily functions like eating and talking. Why wait and suffer when you could talk to your dentist about your symptoms and get the care you need? Your dentist can help relieve your pain and prevent excessive wear on your smile.

Not going to the dentist every six months can have serious repercussions. Is it really worth the risk of getting these conditions? By attending your dental appointments twice a year, you put priority on your oral health and ensure that you can keep smiling for years to come.
