Dental implants are exploding in popularity. According to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, about 3 million people currently have implants, and another half a million are expected to get them every year. So, what exactly are they? Are they hard to take care of? Keep reading below to learn more about dental implants.
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are metal posts, usually made of titanium, that replace the root of a missing tooth. They are inserted directly into the jawbone during a surgical procedure. A connector known as an abutment is placed on top of the implant above the gumline. This allows your implant dentist to slip a crown or bridge over the implant to help it look, feel, and function exactly like a natural tooth.
Am I a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?
Because implants are placed directly into the jawbone, you have to have enough healthy jawbone tissue to support the implant. If not, you must be able to receive a bone graft to make the implant procedure possible. It’s also a good idea to be in good general and oral health. Implants might not be recommended for patients who have certain health conditions that could compromise their ability to heal from the procedure, such as HIV/AIDS or diabetes.
How Do I Take Care of My Dental Implants?
Many people might be reluctant to get dental implants because they are worried that they are difficult to take care of. Fortunately, that is not the case. Caring for your implants is simple if you follow these steps:
- Clean the tooth twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush
- Use a non- or low-abrasive toothpaste
- Make sure to brush under and around the implant crown or bridge if possible
- Floss gently every day with unwaxed or implant-specific floss
- Use a recommended oral irrigator to rinse out the area
How Much Do Dental Implants Cost?
Every case is different, and the total cost will depend on your individual health and needs. Make sure to ask your insurance company if they would at least partially cover the procedure.
In general, implants are fairly expensive. However, they are definitely worth the investment. They are permanent, meaning you pay one cost up front, and then don’t have to worry about paying for a replacement every few years like you would for dentures or a bridge. This means that you would end up saving money in the long run. Dental implants are also better for your health. They stimulate your jawbone every time you chew, preventing bone loss in your jaw. This keeps your face looking younger, and you can’t exactly put a price on youth.
Dental implants are a near-perfect solution to tooth loss. Ask your dentist if you could benefit from getting implants.
