Continue reading to learn more about fluoride in drinking water and how it benefits your community.
What Is Fluoride?
Fluoride is a natural mineral that is in your bones and teeth. It is naturally found in rocks and then released into the soil, water, and air. This mineral is mainly used in dentistry in order to strengthen the protective enamel of the teeth and can be found in over-the-counter products like toothpaste, mouthwash, and supplements. Fluoride treatments can also be completed at the dental office in order to strengthen teeth even more.
What Are the Benefits of Water Fluoridation?
You have probably heard people voicing their concerns about fluoride in public drinking water. However, it is very advantageous to the community. Here are some of its benefits:
- Prevent tooth decay: Small amounts of fluoride go a long way to protect teeth. In fact, this is the most effective way to prevent the most common chronic childhood disease: tooth decay. It is so effective that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) named it as one of the ten great public health achievements of the 20th century. Studies have shown that fluoride in drinking water prevent at least 25% of tooth decay in both children and adults.
- Safe: Over the past 70 years, scientific evidence has determined that adding fluoride to community water supplies is both safe and effective. It has been endorsed by many U.S. Surgeon Generals, the World Health Organization (WHO), American Academy of Pediatrics, and many more organizations.
- Saves you money: It is so much cheaper to have fluoridated water than dealing with the cost of fillings and other dental treatments. For every $1 that is invested in water fluoridation, $38 is saved in dental treatment costs.
- Natural: Fluoride is naturally found in both groundwater and ocean water. Water fluoridation is simply adjusting the amount of fluoride present so that it reaches the level needed in order to be effective at preventing tooth decay. It is similar to fortifying foods with different vitamins and minerals that benefits members of the community.
Fluoride in drinking water isn’t a negative thing. It is perfectly safe! This way, the whole community can maintain happy, healthy smiles!
