How to Sleep with a Toothache

Though not all toothaches are considered dental emergencies, you should still visit your dentist as soon as possible to receive treatment. Why Toothaches Are More Noticeable at Night

During the nighttime, some people suffer from a condition called sleep bruxism. It’s characterized by unconsciously clenching or grinding the teeth, which exacerbates the existing toothache even further. When you lay down, this also intensifies blood flow to the head, which puts additional pressure on sensitive areas in the mouth and compounds the throbbing even more.

6 Tips for Sleeping Through the Night with a Toothache

Until you’re able to get in to see your dentist, there are a few things that can help you sleep through the night, including:

  • Elevate your head – This will help keep blood from rushing to your head and worsening the tooth pain.
  • Practice good oral hygiene – Brush your teeth twice per day. Use fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Additionally, use dental floss or a water flosser before you go to bed to remove debris you couldn’t reach when brushing.
  • Take pain medication – Over-the-counter pain medicine can help you sleep through the night by temporarily easing tooth pain.
  • Rinse your mouth –Mix ½ a teaspoon of salt into eight ounces of warm water. Gargle with this mixture to lessen discomfort.
  • Use a cold compress – Wrap a cold compress or an ice pack in a towel and apply it to the gums or cheek near the toothache to numb the area, lessen pain, and reduce inflammation.
  • Avoid certain foods – Sweet, acidic, sharp, and overly hot or cold foods and drinks should be avoided before bed as they can intensify your toothache.
