4 Things to Expect During an Emergency Dental Visit

Do you have lasting toothaches, chipped or fractured teeth, or anything else that might require an emergency dental visit? These things happen, and they’re nothing that your dentist can’t handle; however, it’s important that you actually give your dentist the chance to treat your mouth! Here are four things that you can expect if you find yourself at the dentist for an emergency appointment.

A Same-Day Appointment

Emergency dentists typically leave time in their schedules for treating patients with dental emergencies; this means that you’ll likely been seen immediately, or at least within the same day if necessary. Something like a displaced tooth is urgent and needs to be handled quickly; but a chipped tooth or something with less severe pain can sometimes wait a few days. Your dentist will always advise you on how to manage the problem until your appointment.

A Detailed Examination

An emergency dental exam is a little different than a routine exam; rather than assessing the overall health of your mouth, your dentist will carefully examine the source of the emergency to determine the best course of action. Sometimes you’ll know the source of the pain or problem, but other times you won’t, so having your dentist investigate is important. They can take x-rays of your mouth to assess the situation more accurately, and also look for signs of inflammation or infection.

Possibility of Anesthetics and Sedation

If your emergency is causing you severe pain or sensitivity, your dentist might need to use anesthetics or sedation during treatment. Even if your emergency isn’t painful, some types of treatment require a local anesthetic or sedation. Additionally, sedation can ease the anxiety that some patients experience during a dental emergency. One common method of sedation is nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas for the feelings of warmth and euphoria it can instill.

A Pain-Free and Restored Smile

The biggest impact that dental emergencies have is compromising your smile; they can negatively affect the look, feel, and functionality of it. However, by seeking treatment from your dentist when you encounter an emergency, you’ll receive the pain relief and restoration that you need. As soon as you sit down in the chair, your dentist’s top priority will be taking care of both you and your smile.

Dental emergencies can be sudden and frightening; amidst the chaos, it helps to have an idea of what you can expect when you show up to the dentist’s office.
