What Should You Do If You Chip a Tooth?

Chipping a tooth is never an enjoyable experience. It can be painful, and it hurts your smile’s appearance too. Still, that doesn’t mean you can’t address it. With the right steps, you can manage the situation smoothly and efficiently.

Here are four ways to respond to chipped teeth from Marrero dentists. Learn them so you’ll know how to heal and restore your smile!

Rinse Your Mouth Out with Water

After chipping a tooth, rinse your mouth out with warm water. You’ll keep the area clean and clear away any blood and dirt.

Rinsing will also prevent you from swallowing the tooth part that broke away. Similarly, it will help keep you from damaging the surrounding teeth by biting down on the injured one.

Take an Over-the-Counter Pain Reliever

Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if you’re experiencing intense pain from your injury. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) reduce both pain and inflammation. The most common varieties of them are ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen. You can also take acetaminophen if necessary.

Popular over-the-counter pain-relief brands include Tylenol, Advil, Aleve, etc.

Preserve the Tooth for Repair

If you can, find the part of your tooth chipped off during the accident. From there, please give it a quick rinse and submerge it in milk or saline solution. Keep the tooth part in clean water if you don’t have either. Your dentist might be able to save the whole tooth if you can get the part to them in time.

Leave the rest of your tooth inside your mouth. Removing it yourself would only lead to heavy bleeding and an increased infection risk.

Receive Treatment from Your Dentist

See your dentist as soon as possible after chipping your tooth. The injured area could cause more problems if left untreated. It might result in infections and advanced dental issues.

Cosmetic dental treatments could also fix the chip’s damage to your smile. For instance, a ceramic crown could hide gaps or cracks caused by the lost tooth part. On the other hand, direct bonding would apply a composite, tooth-colored resin that restores the tooth’s structure. In doing so, others wouldn’t be able to tell that the tooth had ever chipped in the first place.

Chipping a tooth isn’t the best thing to happen, but it isn’t the worst either. Remember the steps above so your smile can be repaired and restored quickly!
