Why & How to Protect Your Lips from the Sun

You may think protecting your skin from the summer heat is pretty obvious. Whether at the beach or the local pool, you’ll remember to apply sunscreen or risk potentially severe sunburn. However, it isn’t just your arms, legs, torso, and neck that can burn. Did you know even lips need sun protection?

Thankfully, it’s possible to protect your lips from the sun with Marrero dentists’ help. Here’s a summary of the matter from your local dental practice — remember it so your lips won’t dry or crack in the summer blaze.

Why Do Your Lips Need Sun Protection?

As it turns out, lips are just as susceptible to the sun’s radiation as other parts of the body. Among other things, that also means they can contract skin cancer from excess UVB rays. You’ll want to keep your lips away from these harmful rays to protect yourself from the risk of this cancer. As a side benefit, you’ll avoid sunburning them too.

Furthermore, lips over-exposed to the sun negatively affect your oral health. Regular brushing and flossing can become challenging or even painful when they get sunburned, tender, or swollen. Lip cancer would also hurt your oral health, causing symptoms in and around your mouth.

How to Protect Your Lips from Sunburn

You can preserve oral health by shielding your lips from the sun’s rays. To do so, here are some suggestions:

  • Use a moisturizing SPF lip balm: Apply an approved sunscreen to your lips every two hours. Find one that goes up to SPF 30, as that level filters out 97% of type B ultraviolet rays. Exfoliate your lips to remove chapped, dry skin — you can prevent skin-picking this way.
  • Stay hydrated: Drink a minimum of eight glasses of water a day — more if it’s sweltering or you’re out in the sun.
  • Avoid direct sunlight: Try to keep out of direct sunlight during hours when the sun is most intense. These hours range from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. standard time and 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daylight savings time.
  • Wear a hat: If you go out in the sun, consider blocking UV rays with a hat. A wide-brimmed one would be an excellent choice.

Though often overlooked, your lips are sensitive body parts that can influence the health of your smile. Keep them safe so your teeth, gums, and mouth continue to thrive.
