What’s on your to-do list this summer? Are you gearing up for an extended family vacation? Or maybe you’d rather spend your days soaking up some sun by the poolside? No matter what your summertime plans are, something to keep in mind while you’re out and about is your oral health! Summer vacation does not mean taking a vacation from personal care; keep reading to learn about six tips from your dentist to keep your smile healthy and bright all season long.
1. Drink Plenty of Water
Water is the absolute best drink for your body—including your mouth! Drinking it throughout the day keeps you hydrated and stimulates the natural flow of saliva inside of your mouth. This helps to wash away any excess food particles or debris that remains lingering around after you eat. It also cools you off and freshens your breath!
2. Pick Tap Water When You Can
There’s nothing wrong with bottled water; it’s especially convenient for when you’re on the go. But you should drink tap water whenever you can. Tap water often has fluoride added to it, which is a naturally occurring mineral that strengthens your tooth enamel. Check to see if your city adds fluoride to its water supply and drink up!
3. Avoid Sweet and Carbonated Beverages
Nothing beats an ice-cold Coke or Pepsi or a tall, refreshing glass of lemonade on a hot summer day. But drinks like these are usually quite sugary and acidic and can wreak havoc on your enamel, while also staining your teeth!
4. Use a Drinking Straw
Drinking your beverages through a straw will greatly reduce the amount of contact between your teeth and harmful liquids. This way, if you must indulge in sugary and fizzy drinks, you will at least offer some protection for your mouth. Also consider finishing your drinks quickly rather than sipping them slowly over time.
5. Try Tea
Certain teas actually contain compounds that can effectively suppress bacteria, which is something that soda certainly can’t do! This will actively slow down the development of tooth decay and gum inflammation; although, be mindful of the sugary additives and flavorings that are often added to tea.
6. Practice Regular Oral Hygiene
The absolute best thing you can do for your smile this summer, and year-round for that matter, is to practice routine oral hygiene. Brush your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes, floss regularly, and use an antibacterial mouthwash to keep things fresh and clean. Don’t let any summer plans prevent you from taking care of your mouth!
Summer is meant to be enjoyed, and you won’t have very much fun if your oral health is compromised! Consider these tips to ensure that your smile is in the best possible shape for the season.
