When your tooth is in need of repair, whether it’s a dental crown or bridge, the last thing you want to worry about is walking around with a temporary restoration while you wait for a permanent one to be made.
The good news is that at Lapalco Family Dental in Marrero, LA, you don’t have to! Take a look at today’s infographic about how our CEREC one-day crown technology works.

One of the most common and multifaceted restorations in dentistry today is the dental crown. It’s a tooth-colored cap that covers, restores, and protects damaged, decayed, or weakened teeth. Crowns can be used to fix all sorts of dental problems, such as:
-Restore teeth that are too damaged for traditional fillings
-Protect a tooth after a root canal procedure
-Change the shape or appearance of a tooth
-Replace old, worn, failing or broken restorations
Placing dental crowns has traditionally involved several steps and multiple visits to your dentist. A dentist has to prepare the tooth, take an impression, and then place a temporary crown while you wait for your permanent crown to be made. Once it’s been fabricated, you return to the dentist to have your permanent crown placed.
When you consider the way dentists used to deal with problems, using tooth extraction as the primary method of solving dental issues like large cavities or teeth in need of root canals, it makes today’s common dental crown placement procedure seem like a dream!
But the truth is, modern technology allows our team at Lapalco Family Dental to make dental crowns faster and more convenient than ever. Our skilled dentist, Dr. Landry, uses the latest in advanced technology, known as CEREC, to design, create, and place your dental crowns in only one day!
Here are just some of the advantages of our CEREC same-day crown technology:
One Convenient Appointment – As we mentioned earlier, typically dental crowns require you to make multiple visits to your dentist. CEREC cuts that time significantly down to one convenient dental appointment.
You come in for your morning appointment where our experienced team will prepare your tooth, then we can design and create your crown while you wait. After a few hours, you walk out of our office with a permanent solution, all without having to sacrifice more time away from work or family than you need to.
No Wasted Time Or Money On A Temporary Fix – CEREC technology allows you to eliminate the need for a temporary crown altogether. This is good news, especially to those of you who’ve had to deal with them before. They’re tight, uncomfortable, and unsightly. Did we mention that they aren’t as secure as permanent crowns, either?
And not that this happens often, but temporary crowns can also leak or become dislodged, damaging the very tooth it was meant to protect. With same-day permanent crowns at Lapalco Family Dental, you don’t have to deal with that risk at all!
No More Impressions That Test Your Gag Reflex – If you’ve ever had the privilege of having a dentist take an impression of your teeth, you might easily recall how unpleasant an experience it can be. It can test your gag reflex and make you feel like you’re going to choke. It can be terribly uncomfortable for some people, and who can blame them?
With our CEREC technology, Dr. Landry takes a 3D scan of your teeth instead and sends those images to the CEREC computer. That’s where your permanent crown is custom designed, and then it’s off to the milling device that carves out your new comfortable, strong, and natural-looking crown.
A Customized, More Comfortable Fit – The other advantage of a digital impression over the goopy, gag-inducing impressions is accuracy. Advanced technology like CEREC allows us to create the perfect size to fit you because the margin for error is incredibly small. A better fitting permanent crown will feel natural and make it easier to maintain proper oral hygiene.
A Natural-Looking, More Attractive Restoration – As if CEREC weren’t already a modern marvel, it also comes with a shade chart that allows us to perfectly match the new crown to your natural teeth. We want to protect teeth and oral health with crowns that blend in with your natural smile. If we’ve done our job well, no one will be able to tell you’ve had any work done!
When you need a dental crown, trust a team that’s committed to giving their patients the most advanced, effective treatment options in dentistry. Give Lapalco Family Dental a call today at 504-264-6461 today or fill out our online form to schedule an appointment.

Welcome back to the Lapalco Family Dental blog!
Our philosophy has always been to provide old-fashioned service with modern technology. And that supports our mission, which is to make it easy for folks in the Marrero, LA area to achieve healthy, great-looking smiles.
We know that the thought of transforming your smile can seem daunting, especially before you see just how convenient we can make it.
Your mind will be consumed by the particulars. How many visits will you need to make to your dentist’s office? How long will each session take? How much will it set you back financially? Is it worth the hassle? We realize that these are all valid questions and concerns.
Lucky for you, there is a no-hassle, affordable solution: CEREC same-day dental crowns. In just one simple trip to our office, the gifted team here can create a dental crown for you that looks and functions like a natural tooth.
As your trusted partner for oral health, we’ve got you covered when it comes to smile transformations. We hope you sense that we value your time as much as you do, and we wouldn’t want to ever waste any of it unnecessarily. That’s why we invested heavily in CEREC dental crown technology. This is a newfangled system that offers our patients an easy, reliable way to fix a score of dental issues.
We should probably mention that CEREC is medical shorthand for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. Don’t worry, we don’t expect you to remember all that. Just remember that what CEREC means for you is that we can now accomplish in about an hour what may take several weeks at another dentist’s practice.
Around here, the CEREC process begins when we make a digital impression of the tooth or teeth that need work. We then reshape the tooth into an abutment that will support your dental crown.
In earlier eras, and even now at other dental offices, this would require sending your impression to a laboratory. The lab will then craft a dental crown for you as soon as they can get around to filling that order. Unfortunately, it could be weeks before they are able to get to your dental crown and send it back to the dentist. All the while, you’ll be left to wait around and deal with it.
Amazingly, with CEREC, we can now avoid that inconvenience by doing it all in-house, which saves you from having to make an extra trip to the dentist. With CEREC, we use our on-site milling machine to craft your dental crown while you wait.
With the help of modern computer software, we are able to send a digital impression of your teeth to the CEREC machine. The machine turns that information into a dental crown for you.
Essentially, what we are saying is that you can walk into our office with a tooth that has been bothering you, and go home with a natural-looking, more comfortable smile.
We told you it was easy!
You can now fix any number of dental problems without a big commitment of time and money. Our CEREC crowns can quickly repair the appearance of your teeth and restore your biting power. This means that you will be able to smile without embarrassment, and you can eat the foods you love without having to worry.
Make It Happen!
We can’t wait to get started! Even though we offer fast, convenient service, we want it to feel like when you come to visit, it’s really a visit. We talk about your friends, family, how the kids are, and while you’re here we’ll get a little dental work done at the same time. How does that sound?

You have a chipped tooth. Your reflexes aren’t quite as quick as they used to be. You learned that while pitching batting practice for your son’s baseball team.
Your neighbor just found out he will need a root canal treatment.
And one of your co-workers lost one of his teeth over the weekend.
It’s a good thing you all live in or near Marrero, LA, where the dentist at Lapalco Family Dental can fix all of your smiles with dental crowns.
Your Chipped Tooth
When you come to Lapalco Family Dental for your appointment, our dentist will restore your tooth to its former glory (and you won’t have to keep answering questions about how your tooth got broken).
The first step in the process is reshaping your damaged tooth. The break is the most obvious problem, but your tooth may have been weakened as a result of the impact of a flying baseball.
By reshaping your teeth, we will be removing the damaged parts of your tooth at the same time. This also preserves the stronger, healthier parts of your tooth.
This is also when you’ll appreciate that we offer CEREC dental crowns.
At another dentist office, they might have to send an order for your crown to a laboratory. It could take weeks for the lab to make your crown and ship it to the dentist. Then you will have to go back for a second appointment to have your permanent crown placed.
While you are waiting, that dentist will put a temporary crown in your mouth instead. This will serve as a placeholder although it won’t secured the same way as your permanent dental crown.
At Lapalco Family Dental, we can make your crown in our office on the same day as your appointment. You won’t have to wear a temporary crown. You won’t have to wait weeks for your real crown.
The day that you come to see us is the day that your tooth will be repaired.
Your Neighbor’s Root Canal
Nobody likes talking about root canals. Many people mistakenly believe they will be painful, when, really, they take away the pain caused by an infected tooth.
The dental crown your neighbor receives will be the final stage of his procedure.
Before the root canal treatment begins, your neighbor will receive either a local anesthetic, or he may undergo sedation dentistry so he doesn’t remember any of the procedure.
To remove the infected pulp inside your neighbor’s tooth, we make an opening in the crown. Once the infected material is removed, we sanitize the inside of the tooth, and we use a special material to fill it.
To seal the tooth, we can create a dental crown so your neighbor’s smile looks as good as it ever did and so your neighbor can continue using that tooth for eating.
Your Co-Worker’s Lost Tooth
A lost or missing tooth can create a lot of problems.
You didn’t say anything about it, but it was actually kind of distracting when you were talking to your co-worker. Plus, you could tell that he felt self-conscious about the space in his smile.
But you couldn’t see is the hole in his jawbone underneath his gums. From an oral health standpoint, this could be a bigger issue than the gap between his teeth.
Without a root in his jawbone, he could lose up to 25 percent of the bone density in that part of his mouth in the next 12 months. To prevent that, he has chosen to get a dental implant along with his dental crown.
Dental implants replace the roots of missing teeth. After the implant is placed, the jawbone will grow around it to hold it in place.
We can attach a dental crown on the implant to fully restore your co-workers’ smile (so he won’t feel so embarrassed) and the function of his teeth (so he can still order whatever he wants when you go to lunch together).
The Many Uses Of Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are one of the most effective dental restorations ever devised. As we have shown, they can be used to repair damaged teeth, complete a root canal procedure, or to replace a missing tooth when paired with a dental implant.
Those are just a few of the ways we use dental crowns to help our patients at Lapalco Family Dental in Marrero, LA. If you would like to know if our dentist can help you or someone you know with a dental crown, fill out our online form or call 504-264-6461 to schedule an appointment.

Why A Dental Crown Can Help
Before we explain how you can get a CEREC same-day crowns, we want to make sure you understand the purpose of a dental crown.
When you have your dental crown, it will look just like on of your natural teeth. Just as important, it will function like a real tooth, so you can continue eating the foods that you love.
If you need a dental crown, that means something is wrong with your tooth. Here are some of the most common problems we fix with crowns:
◆ Chipped tooth — You may have lost part of a tooth if you were in an accident. Having a chipped tooth can make you self-conscious about your smile. It also leaves that tooth more vulnerable to a bacterial infection, which could cause our next problem.
◆ Decayed Tooth — We probably don’t need to explain why tooth decay is bad for you teeth. In some cases, the damage is minimal and can be corrected with a filling. In more serious cases, a dental crown may be necessary to remove all the decay and to reduce the risk of reinfection.
◆ Discolored Tooth — A decayed tooth can certainly turn an ugly yellow, brown, or black color. You also may develop a stained tooth due to habits like smoking or excessive coffee or tea drinking.
◆ Misshapen Tooth — If you have a tooth that is misshapen in some way, it may cause problems with your bite. A dental crown can resolve this issue.
◆ Weak Tooth — This could be the result of a tooth filling that has been replaced so many times that it has worn down the structure of your tooth. This may be the result of tooth decay, and it may be the result of an injury to your mouth.
CEREC Vs. Other Dental Crowns
Almost any dental crown will fix the problems we mentioned above. You have to decide how soon you want your crown.
With many dental crowns, the dentist will make an impression of the tooth to be reshaped. This impression is sent to a laboratory, so they can make your crown.
The dentist also will reshape your tooth into an abutment. In the process, he or she will remove the damaged, decayed, or discolored portions of your tooth. After he or she is finished, the dentist will place a temporary crown on your tooth.
Hopefully, your temporary crown won’t come loose in the weeks while you are waiting for your permanent crown to arrive. When it does, you will need to ask your boss for more time off work or give up some time with your family to get the crown bonded to your tooth.
At Lapalco Family Dental, we offer CEREC crowns because we know your time is valuable. (CEREC is an abbreviation for ceramic reconstruction, in case you were wondering.)
With CEREC, we start by making a digital impression of your damaged tooth. That impression is sent to a computer that controls our milling machine. We don’t have to send your impression somewhere else. We can make it in our office.
Our dentist will still need to reshape your tooth into an abutment. But instead of placing a temporary crown, we can cement your permanent crown in place before you leave.
You can walk in with a problematic tooth and walk out with your dental crown that same day.
Value Your Time And Your Teeth
We know when we have a problem, we want it fixed as soon as possible. With dental crowns, same-day service is as good you can get.

Would it surprise you that we use something in our dental practice (Lapalco Family Dental in Marrero, LA) that is 2,000 years old on an almost daily basis? It’s true! We use porcelain to make our crowns. Why porcelain? Porcelain is very durable, stain-resistant, and is also the material that most closely approximates the appearance of your natural teeth. Porcelain was invented during the Han Dynasty in China, and made its way to Europe in the 16th century. The word “porcelain” comes from the Italian word porcellana, a type of translucent sea shell. In dentistry, porcelain has never been surpassed in terms of performance and aesthetic value.
It’s somewhat ironic then that to make our porcelain crowns, we use some of the most advanced technology available in dentistry. The CEREC Same Day Crowns system combines the advantages of porcelain which have been known for millennia with cutting edge advancements in the fields of digital imaging, automated manufacturing, and software. The crowns that are made using CEREC are more accurately designed and more durable, capable of saving teeth that at one time could only be addressed with an extraction by an oral surgeon.
On top of all these advantages, CEREC Same Day Crowns are fast. Traditionally, getting a dental crown place was a procedure that would take weeks to complete. You’d need two appointments: one to have your dental impression made (which is used to design the crown for your teeth) and one to have it placed. During the weeks in between, your crown would be fabricated at a specialized lab outside of the practice.
Besides being inconvenient for patients, all that waiting is dangerous. Because crowns usually take so long to make, you would have a temporary crown placed to provide basic protection for your tooth. These temporary crowns are very prone to breakage, and if this happens (more often than you might think) your tooth is now vulnerable to infection. This usually can only be treated with a root canal (which is likely why you’re getting the crown in the first place)!
How Does CEREC Make Crowns So Fast?
CEREC cuts out all the time it usually takes a crown; a procedure that took weeks now only takes a single appointment with CEREC. CEREC is an acronym (like AWOL, NAFTA, or SWOT) that stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. It’s a bit of a mouthful, so here’s what it means in plain English:
Chairside Economical Restoration: The entire fabrication (or “milling”) process takes place in your dentist’s office. There is no need to send away for a crown to be made. It is economical in terms of time and the materials needed to fabricate the crown, which is technically referred to as a dental restoration.
Esthetic Ceramics: simply refers to the porcelain from which CEREC Same Day Crowns are made. Porcelain is a type of ceramic, and it is unmatched in terms of performing the functions of your natural teeth, as well as how it looks in relation to your natural teeth.
How Your CEREC Crown is Designed
CEREC Same Day Crowns are custom made for your specific teeth, like all other crowns. However, CEREC achieves this in a way that is very different from traditional methods.
In a traditional crown placement, the first thing that your dentist will do is create an impression; similar to a mold, an impression is a physical “picture” of your oral cavity and teeth in three dimensions. These are useful, but the chance for error is high (for example, if the mold is taken incorrectly) and because the impressions are solid objects (and are relatively large in size) they usually cannot be stored, in case your crown is damaged due to injury.
CEREC uses advanced imaging technology to create a digital impression. Digital impressions are much more accurate than physical ones, can be stored, duplicated, and transmitted easily. Most importantly, a digital impression can be read by a computer.
The digital impression is sent to a computer, where powerful CAD/CAM software (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing) interprets the impression, and generates a design for your crown. This process produces designs that are so accurate, we are now able to save teeth that were once considered unsalvageable; even teeth that have been injured and are broken very near the gum line.
Once your dentist has gone over the design and made any necessary changes or additions, the final design is sent to an automatic fast-milling machine. Instead of a human spending hours doing painstaking, slow work, the automatic fast-milling machine quickly turns a block of porcelain into your crown in minutes. Once the milling process is complete, your crown can be placed immediately.
All of this saves you precious time and protects you from the risk of a tooth infection.
Are You Ready for the Next Generation of Dental Technology?
If your tooth has been damaged due to injury, tooth decay, or if it is recommended that you receive endodontic therapy (root canal), you need to get a crown. Don’t settle for waiting weeks when it can be done in an hour!
