How To Restore Your Smile In One Day [BLOG]

September 18, 2017

One of the reasons patients tell us they waited so long to seek help for their smile problems is because they felt intimidated and overwhelmed by the process. That’s understandable because when you have major problems with your teeth, or are missing teeth entirely, it can be scary to think about how you could possibly come back from that kind of devastation to your oral health.

How many procedures would you have to endure? How long would all of it take? Or even more frightening, how painful would it be? Many people who’ve lost teeth, for example, let their oral health get off track because they were scared to go to the dentist in the first place. So all these roadblocks make sense.

But Dr. Landry and our team at Lapalco Family Dental want you to know you can restore your smile to its original glory, and you can do it in only one visit to our Marrero dental office!

We’ll explain how we can do that in a minute, but first, let’s talk about the reasons you shouldn’t put off fixing your dental problems any longer.

Reason #1 – You’ll look great and feel even better!

A damaged smile is embarrassing, there’s no question. The damage starts with your teeth in the form of chips, cracks, breaks, and tooth loss. But from there, the damage becomes emotional. You’re ashamed of your smile, so naturally, you avoid social interaction or any situation where you’d risk revealing the unsightly smile problems you have.

A smile that’s plagued with problems can also send a message that you’re lazy or that you don’t care about your health, which in most cases, couldn’t be further from the truth!

All of this can have a devastating effect on your emotional and physical health. Getting the dental treatment you need will not only give you an attractive smile, but it will give you a much needed boost in self-confidence to enjoy your life.

Reason #2 – You can enjoy foods you’ve avoided for years!

If you’re missing teeth or have loose, shifting teeth, it will inevitably affect your ability to eat certain foods. Empty spaces or even dental pain will have an adverse effect on your nutrition. The changes to your diet then begin this domino effect of poor nutrition, and of course, poor health overall.

Restoring your smile will allow you to have fully-functioning teeth so you can eat enjoy the foods you love and maintain more nutritional balance for better health.

Reason #3 – You’ll reclaim your oral health and avoid problems in the future!

When it comes to your teeth and gums, letting even minor issues go untreated leads to serious problems down the road. So when you replace missing teeth or fix damaged teeth, you’re reclaiming your oral health once and for all. You’ll have strong, durable, and lasting restorations that will allow you to brush and floss with ease.

Digital X-rays or 3D Scans? The Facts From Your Marrero Dentist

January 19, 2017

I’ve worked as a Marrero dentist for decades, and one thing that surprises me is the improvement in technology in the dental field. Staying on the cutting edge of dentistry is an important part of giving patients the best possible care. At Lapalco Family Dentistry, we make every effort to implement new technology that is more comfortable for the patient and leads to better, more accurate results.

We provide services like same-day crowns, and place dental implants for patients who have missing teeth. But these advanced services are only possible because we have advanced technology to lead the way. Today I want to tell you have an important tool in my office that can save your time and money while helping to resolve serious oral health issues: 3D scans.

The Difference Between Traditional Digital X-rays and 3D Scans

Digital X-rays have become extremely popular in the dental world. We dentists love them because they are safer for the patient and give us precise results. Digital X-rays reduce the radiation exposure by 90 percent when compared with traditional X-rays. That alone is a big enough selling point for me, as I ALWAYS air on the side of patient safety. Digital X-rays have become great tools in diagnosing and assessing patients for signs of tooth decay or root issues. They are low-cost, safe, and can be rendered in just a few seconds.

… BUT

Over the years, we dentists needed more than a two-dimensional image of the oral cavity. As we began implementing advanced techniques like placing dental implants, we needed a better tool for diagnosing and treating patients. That’s where 3D images comes in. Compared with digital X-rays, 3D images give us a better view of tissues and bones than traditional digital X-rays.

Here’s What You Can Expect From Our 3D Scans

At Lapalco Family Dentistry, I have a cone beam computed tomography machine right here in my office. This is a machine you rarely see outside of a hospital. The CBCT is one of the best tools I have when treating patients who have missing teeth. Here’s why: The CBCT rotates around the head and captures images of the oral cavity.

Once the scan is completed, I can see 3D images of the patient’s oral cavity. It gives me precise results when diagnosing problems like sleep apnea or planning dental implant treatments. I use the CBCT to find the most appropriate location for the dental implant. With dental implants, placement is everything. We need to know what area of the mouth can best support the implant, along with where to avoid nerves and blood vessels. It’s safe to say that in using 3D scans for dental implant placement, we can achieve better results that lead to a reduced recovery.

The CBCT only takes a few minutes and is 100 percent painless. You just relax as the scanner rotates around your head.

Schedule Your Consultation Today

Depending on your dental needs, we can schedule a CBCT scan with you in our office today. I love using technology to teach patients about their oral health. A well-educated patient is more comfortable with the treatment and ultimately more relaxed in the dental chair. You can schedule a visit with my office today by calling 504-264-6461. I look forward to hearing from you.

Missing Teeth Are a Genuine Pain

October 24, 2016

At Lapalco Family Dental, we see both children and adults. So we know that losing a tooth or even several teeth when you’re a child is usually no big thing. You know it’s temporary and that those gaps will be closed by new adult teeth. But it’s a different story when you’re an adult and lose a tooth or teeth.

Suddenly, you’re looking at the prospect of flashing a gap-toothed smile for the rest of your life. Or, not smiling at all. You many not know it yet, but you’ll be more likely to chew on the side with more teeth. That can lead to premature wear on those teeth, to muscle imbalances, and to headaches.

Let’s be clear: there are plenty of adults who live with one or more missing teeth. But very, very few are happy about that fact.

You may have thought that replacing that missing tooth or teeth was too expensive. The fact is that getting a dental bridge or dental implant may actually save you money down the road. And either option will greatly improve your quality of life.

Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is basically three crowns bonded together. A crown (or cap, as you may have heard it called) is either a hollow or solid “false tooth.” In the case of dental bridges, the hollow end crowns, known as abutments, fit over healthy teeth. Those teeth will likely need to be reduced a bit in size so that the crowns look natural.

The solid crown that fills the gap is called the pontic. Once the abutments are cemented into place, the pontic takes over the smiling and/or chewing duties for the missing tooth.

Dental bridges are very well-established technology. The materials used to make them are more durable and lifelike than ever. Despite those materials, bridges still have some potential drawbacks.

The first drawback is in the nature of design itself. Chewing exerts tremendous pressure; when you chew on a pontic, that pressure is transferred to the abutments, increasing stress on those teeth. Over time, that stress can lead to failure of the bridge. Also, decay can compromise one or both abutments, again causing the bridge to fail. That’s more common than you might think, because dental bridges require a special flossing technique that not everyone takes the time to master.

Still, a dental bridge can be a good solution. Generally speaking, one or crowns, or perhaps the bridge itself, may need to be replaced every 8 to 10 years. Some last longer, others fail more quickly.

Dental Implants

The state-of-the-art solution for missing teeth is the dental implant. The implant itself a tiny titanium screw that is inserted through the gum and into the bone below. Once the bone has fused to the screw, the dental restoration is firmly attached. That restoration is a single solid crown for one implant, or a bridge or even a full arch of replacement teeth when a number of implants are used.

Implants offer a number of advantages over dental bridges. The implant basically replaces a tooth root. That transfers the pressure of chewing to the underlying bone, which helps keep it healthy. Bridges can’t do that.

The titanium implants themselves should last as long you live, and restorations that are placed on implants tend to last considerably longer. So, while implants may be a more expensive option up front, many people actually save money in the long run.

You don’t have to live with the embarrassment and pain of missing teeth any longer. But

there’s only one way to know which option is right for your needs, and that’s to schedule a consultation with Lapalco Family Dental. To schedule a visit at our dentist office in Marrero, LA, call 504-264-6461 or fill out our online form.

Non-Adventures With Implant-Supported Dentures

September 8, 2016

We all like a little bit of excitement in our lives.

It’s the reason people watch scary movies. It’s the reason people ride roller coasters and jump out of airplanes. It’s even part of the reason some people get tattoos.

If you are thrill-seeker who likes to live on the edge, then stay away from dental implants when you are thinking about replacing your teeth.

Implants will hold your dentures securely in place. That’s hardly the kind of experience you’ll want if you prefer to live life on the edge.

Just so you know, we do offer dental implants as one of the restorative services at Lapalco Family Dental. Our dentist is convinced that people in and around Marrero, LA, want stability with their dentures.

The Challenge Of Speaking Your Mind

We think that everyone has a right to express his or her opinion, whether it’s about Presidential candidates or something really important like college football or where to get the best barbecue.

If you go through the trouble of getting dental implants at our Louisiana dental center, then your dentures will be incredibly secure and stable in your mouth.

You will be able to say exactly what you want to say, and you won’t have to worry about your dentures coming loose as you are about to make your best point. You won’t be concerned that your “teeth” with fall out just as you are about to make a funny joke.

You can even read a whole story to your grandchildren without getting tripped up on loose-fitting dentures a single time.

If you are the adventurous type, then you will have a lot more excitement with traditional dentures. At any moment, your dentures could come loose. You may not be able to explain what you are looking for to a salesperson, or you could have trouble placing your order in a restaurant.

With implants, you can do each of those things easily. Where’s the fun in that?

Speaking Of Food …

Many people think of adventurous eaters as people who are willing to try a variety of unusual foods.

Sure, you can try octopus, haggis, blood pudding, or escargot, but that’s only one way to turn your next meal into a true adventure.

Instead, you could walk into your favorite restaurant with nothing by a set of dentures to bite and chew your food. Then, you can order corn on the cob, steak, and carrots. Crunchy foods can challenge your ability to bite into them. They may even pull your dentures loose. Think of how much fun that could be for you and the other people at your table.

Steak poses a different kind of challenge as chewing it much difficult with traditional dentures.

And skip the typical soft desserts (cakes, ice cream) and go for something bolder, like peanut brittles. It’s sticky and crunchy so eating that with nothing by dentures will be a real thrill.

See, if you get implant-supported dentures, you will be able to eat practically as well as someone with real teeth. You’ll be able to bite into corn and carrots comfortably. You’ll be able to chew the steak with little or no strain.

Indeed, dental implants will make your dentures both more secure and stronger. That’s the kind of combination that makes it too easy to eat whatever you want.

Living On The Edge

If you do decide to get dental implants, you will be doing something that will make your dentures more stable than they could ever be on their own.

By using implants, you are replacing the roots of your teeth. When the implants are embedded in your jaw, you will need some time to heal before your dentures are attached.

In the long-term, the implants will help to sustain the health of your jaw, which make it much less likely that you will need to have your dentures refitted on a regular basis.

But think about what you will be missing. You won’t have dentures that could slip out at any moment when you are a sharing a story from your last vacation. You won’t wonder if your next bite will pull your replacement teeth from your mouth, either.

You’ll just be stuck with a nice smile and dentures that stay in place because of your dental implants.

How Adventurous Do You Want To Be?

You spend your days wondering when your “teeth” will fall out next, or you could live knowing that your implant-supported dentures will remain secure.

If you think you would prefer the boring life of implant-supported dentures, then go ahead and make an appointment at Lapalco Family Dental. To schedule a visit at our dentist office in Marrero, LA, at 504-264-6461 or fill out our online form.

Harry’s Journey: Dental Implants

July 29, 2016

You may remember Harry, a patient we told you about a few blog posts ago. Harry was a recent retiree who had finally come into some money after almost 40 years of avoiding the dentist due to financial strain! Harry came into our office looking for a tooth replacement solution. We helped him throughout the process of achieve a beautiful new smile with removable dentures. But Harry’s journey did not end there. Today, we would like to continue Harry’s story and tell you about how he made the switch to dental implants and how they changed his life!

If you missed the first part of Harry’s journey, you can read it all about it in our blog post entitled, Harry’s Journey: Removable Dentures. The team at Lapalco Family Dental is equipped to handle all kinds of restorative situations. Give our Marrero, LA dental office a call if you have a need! We would be happy to help you find a solution to your problem.

Struggling With Dentures

The last time we heard about Harry, he had just received his new removable dentures. After the procedure and placement, Harry immediately loved the way his new teeth made him look. They did not have the poor appearance of his previous smile. However, once he was home and healing from the extraction surgery, he began to notice some of the downsides of having removable dentures.

For one thing, they were not very easy to get used to. Because they simply sat in his mouth, they sometimes were awkward to deal with. He also had trouble keeping them in his mouth sometimes. In general, he was not happy with the way they functioned. So he called up his buddy Bill again to complain:

[ring, ring, ring]

“Hello? This is Bill.”

“Hey, it’s Harry. How’s it going?”

“Great, just got back from a fishing trip with the boys. How’re you?”

“Not doing so well. I’ve been trying to get used to these new dentures, but they just aren’t cooperating.” Harry complained.

“Ah, yeah, I heard that dentures can be difficult to get used to sometimes. They work great for some people, but sometimes not for others. Did they give you any other replacement options?”

Harry hesitated. “Yeah, they said something about implants, but that would require surgery and more money…”

“But if they help you eat and smile and laugh, aren’t they worth it?”

“If they actually work, I suppose so.” Harry had to agree with that.

“Well, maybe you should reconsider them again. Give the office a call, I’m sure they can tell you more about it.”

Reconsidering Dental Implants

So Harry called up his friends at Lapalco Family Dental once again and schedule a consultation. He wanted to learn what these implants were all about. How much would it cost him? Would they really help him eat better?

When Harry met with the team at the dental office, they told him all about dental implants and how they could change his life. Dental implants, Harry learned, were:

  • strong
  • secure
  • beautiful
  • healthy

They would stay put! They would let him eat whatever he wanted to eat without worry. Yes, they did require surgery, but then he wouldn’t have to worry about his teeth again for decades to come. It seemed like a good idea, even if it was an investment.

Harry’s Happy Ending

So they scheduled the procedures and Harry was able to get the implants he needed to secure his smile. After healing, he was finally about to eat, laugh, and smile without worry that his teeth would shift around or fall out. A year later, he is doing great and loves his smile!

Schedule Your Visit

As you may have guessed by now, Harry isn’t actually a real patient of ours. However, we do work with patients every day who are just like Harry! Patients who are looking for a tooth replacement solution for the first time or who are currently dealing with a solution that isn’t working for them. Either way, our Marrero, LA dental team can help.

If you’re like Harry and just need some help, please call us at 504-264-6461 or request an appointment online. We would be happy to help you!
