Teeth Whitening: Smile Brighter, Smile Better
Tooth discoloration is a natural consequence of growing old, but it can also be caused by certain medications, diseases, genetics, poor oral hygiene, trauma, smoking and chewing tobacco, and the consumption of stain-promoting foods and drinks.
If you are unhappy about the color of your teeth, Marrero, LA cosmetic dentist Dr. C.J. Landry can brighten your smile with professional whitening at Lapalco Family Dental. Professional teeth whitening is one of the simplest and fastest ways to make you and your smile look years younger.
We do cosmetic whitening here in the office. It’s called Boost, and it’s an in the chair bleaching agent. But we always send you home with a special kit as well because we get a better long-term result when you use the take-home trays at night.
Boost is wonderful if you tell me on Thursday that your teeth have to be bright for a wedding on Friday night. Other than that, we get the best results with wearing bleaching trays at night. It’s safe. Originally, dentists used the bleaching material for gum disease, and they found in the process of decreasing a person’s gum disease, it also lightened the teeth, and that’s what it has become over time.
I recommend in-office professional bleaching because it’s stronger than what you can get over the counter. And you have to be aware – if you have fillings in the front or one crown in the front, they won’t bleach no matter what happens. We don’t want to go and bleach everything and then you have one crown that’s yellow on the front and stands out.
Professional vs. DIY Teeth Whitening
Many people choose do-it-yourself whitening because it is affordable and convenient. However, DIY whitening products contain much weaker concentrations of peroxide gel, which means that they can take a long time before you see the results you want. Professional teeth whitening not only guarantees whiter teeth quickly, it is also safer. Dr. Landry oversees the procedure from start to finish so there is no danger of using too much peroxide or harming your gums and cheeks.
The Teeth Whitening Procedure
Dr. Landry will examine your mouth before performing the teeth whitening procedure. Your teeth and gums must be healthy; tooth decay and gum disease must be treated first before your teeth can be whitened. Also, if you have old restorations like fillings and veneers, they may need to be replaced after the procedure to match your new smile.
We will take impressions of your teeth to create the custom whitening trays that will be filled with professional-strength peroxide gel. After that, your custom take-home whitening kit will be ready in just a few days. We will provide instructions on how long to wear your whitening trays, which will generally be a few hours each day. In just three to four days, most patients see a significant difference in the color and appearance of their smile!
